Art Workshop: Painting Batik Bags
“Batik” is an Indonesian term and technique whereby you use wax to create patterns that resist the dye when the fabric is painted or emerged in dye. In this activity a water soluble glue is used instead of wax, to make this an activity for all ages.
Length:
3 x 1 h 15 m
sessions (allow a day between for glue and paint to dry)
Age:
+3 yrs and above (allow for individual child development)
I enjoyed the process of creating this project, so everyone from child to adult can have fun with this activity.
You Will Need:
Cotton bags
School Glue, or any other water soluble glue
Pointed Squeeze Bottle (or use if the glue bottle if it is pointed)
Acrylic Paint
Fabric Medium
Plan a design on paper.
When thinking about your design allow for the thickness of the glue lines. When you finish the lines you make with the glue will remain the colour of the fabric.
Put wax paper inside bag, this will prevent the glue seeping though to the other side.
Draw design on fabric bag with glue.
Allow glue to dry over night
Day Two
Mix the paint and medium, following fabric medium instructions
Paint colour onto the fabric bag.
Paint around the glue, after set and washed, it will remain.
Allow paint to dry over night
Day Three
Finish and set Batik fabric painting.
After waiting 24 hours for the paint to dry.
Soak bag in cold water for at least 30 mins.
Rub gently and lightly scrub glue off, then rinse.
Hang bag to dry.
To set paint, cover the painted image with white (tissue) paper and thoroughly iron on a hot setting for at least 2 mins
Machine Wash in cold water on a delicate cycle with washing powder to leave the fabric feeling soft.
